Father’s Day Countdown: Superman

So, I am a huge sucker for really cute and sentimental things… the current favorite is this Sears commercial:

On that superhero note, this is a fun apron that Dad will get a kick out of:

Father’s Day Countdown: Papa Bear

Mugs and ties might be as generic as you can get in terms of Father’s Day gifts, but this mug is too cute to resist:

{Papa Bear Mug   $14.95}

Fill it with Dad’s favorite candy for an extra touch. As a reminder, Father’s Day is Sunday, June 16th!

Getting Iced

One of my husband’s favorite beverages is whiskey, which should really be enjoyed with the proper type of ice cube:

Turns out that this is actually very easy to achieve without having to make a trip out to some hipster bar in Brooklyn or Portland:

{Set of 2 Tovolo Sphere Ice Molds $9.99}

I recently gifted a pair of these molds to someone as a thank you gift, and he absolutely loved them. Might be a good item to keep in mind for Father’s Day next month!

It’s really cold here in Seattle. Now, I know that sounds absurd, given the fact that I moved here from Boston, but it’s true. There might not be snow on the ground, but that doesn’t mean I don’t need my mittens when I step outside.

A solution for the cold weather? Carry a hot, toasty beverage in this adorable Jack Spade thermos!

{Jack Spade Repp Stripe Thermos   $35}

Cute enough for a girl, tough enough for a man. Perfect for anyone and everyone in a colder climate. Bon weekend, all!

Holiday Gift Guide: He’s the Man

Sincerest apologies for the lack of posts this week… I’ve been running at full speed with holiday preparations in my little corner of the universe! We put up a Christmas tree this week, and it’s been a flurry of gift-wrapping, shipping boxes, and getting gifts to donate to the adopt-a-family program I was participating in through work.

However, I feel terrible because I know all of you are ALSO trying to take care of holiday gifting, and that’s exactly what this blog is intended to help you with! The good news is that I’ve mostly caught up on my holiday stuff, so now I can direct my attention back to The Present Perfect. Today’s guide:

2012.12.13 - Holiday Gift Guide - He's the Man

Clockwise, from top left:

Set of 2 Sphere Ice Molds $11.99  /  Shwood Zebrawood Wayfarers  $135  /  How To Be a Man: A Guide To Style and Behavior For The Modern Gentleman $16.47  /  Jack Spade Repp Stripe Thermos  $35  /  Otter Fabric Wax $9.95

Time for Tree-Hugging

Today’s gift pick comes from my friend Annie, who I know from grad school. We knew we were kindred spirits when we discovered our shared love of baking cupcakes and that we both turned to the same floral supply store in New York City for all of our event-planning needs (random—and it’s Jamali Garden, in case you are interested). Anyway, Annie texted me recently about these WeWOOD watches:

{WeWOOD Voyage watch, $140}

This watch is made of 100% natural, hypo-allergenic wood and is without any toxic chemicals. This particular beige version is made of maple wood. You can also feel good about your purchase, as WeWOOD plants a tree for every watch sold. And if you aren’t into the crunchy justifications for buying this, it just looks plain cool. This one is a men’s watch, but I actually love the look of a big ol’ chunky watch on a female wrist.

Thanks for the suggestion, Annie! These watches are such fun accessories and who can resist a purchase that also does some good?

So Manly

There are some things in life that are just really manly. Certain liquors, rugged pickups, power tools, Ryan Gosling’s amazing abs… However, in the realm of air fresheners for the home, scents usually veer on the side of floral, feminine, or the ever-neutral clean linen smell. Until now:

{Archer Air Superiority room spray, $14 each}

With scents like “European Sports Car,” “Distillery,” and “Hunting Lodge,” these room sprays are the perfect complement to any man-cave. Buy all three and they’ll give you free shipping. Disclaimer: I haven’t actually smelled these, I am sort of hankering for a can of “Hunting Lodge.” The description on the website is: “Hearth stone, gun powder and damp timber. It smells just like it did 120 years ago, because it hasn't changed in 120 years. Other than the flat screen and microwave.” Kind of awesome.

Two in One

Good morning, and happy Friday! I can’t believe how quickly this week just flew by… though I couldn’t be more excited for the weekend! I’ve been looking forward to tomorrow night’s activity for a while now—an Alison Krauss & Union Station concert at a beautiful winery! Can’t wait.

One thing I realized while moving is that we have an insane amount of glassware. Who the hell needs this many champagne flute, wine glasses, etc? While we are fortunate to have plenty of cabinet space, part of me wonders what the point of holding onto all of this stuff is when we rarely use the majority of it. Which brings me to the gift pick:

{Beer & Shot glass, $19 for a set of 2}

This gives you both a beer and shot glass in one! Double the fun, half the storage space… and it will make your post-party dishwashing go a bit more quickly (although this is dishwasher safe, so only if you prefer to hand wash). I feel like the shot aspect of this beer glass could turn a regular Power Hour into a particularly ruinous one…

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend, and see you back here on Monday! As always, thank you for reading my blog.

Fore Fun

Top o’ the mornin’ to ya! It’s Wednesday, which probably means that everyone’s mid-week slump can be improved with some humor and levity. Today’s gift pick is of the practical joke variety… and golf-related:

{Set of 4 trick golf balls, $12.95}

These standard-size balls will surely lighten up your next round of golf. We have:

-The Exploder, which emits a cloud of smoke-like powder when the ball is tapped

-The Phantom, which explodes into a wet mist upon a full-force hit

-The Jetstreamer, which turns into a spiraling ribbon upon full impact

-The Unputtaball, which skids and veers when putted

Just make sure you bust these out with someone who can take a joke! I played competitively in high school and definitely learned that there is a spectrum when it comes to golfer attitudes. Some people are super laid-back and view golf as what it is—a fun and enjoyable four hours. However, I have also totally witnessed other people do things like stomp and fume and even throw an entire golf bag filled with clubs down the fairway (which, admittedly, was pretty impressive). I’d say that you should try these practical joke balls on the former and perhaps not the latter.

I am pretty excited about tomorrow’s post—we’ll be featuring a fun interview, so stay tuned and check back here tomorrow morning!

Retro Chic

Good morning, and happy Monday! I hope that everyone had a great weekend. It was hot and sunny here, and we finally unpacked enough stuff to start eating at home—thank God! Even though Seattle has a wonderful food scene, both my husband and I were really sick of going out to eat all the time—we both really enjoy cooking, so it was such a relief to hit up Costco, stock the fridge and pantry, and get some home-cooked food in our stomachs.

While the unpacking is the boring, unglamorous part of moving in, decorating is the fun part. We are trying to utilize all of our old stuff that we moved across the country, but with more space to fill, some purchases have been made. On my trip to Portland the other week, I got a fun accessory for my study:

{Tivoli Audio Model One radio $149.99}

In Portland, I got this from the adorable store Canoe, but it is also sold on Amazon—which is what I linked above. I really enjoy the retro look of this radio, and it has great sound—don’t be fooled by its petite size! It’s a simple, easy-to-use device: FM radio, AM radio, and an auxiliary mode that allows you to hook up an iPod/CD player/whatever with a connection cord (not included). It also comes in other colors. I could see this being a good gift for the boyfriend or your hippest friend—it’s cool without being too cutesy.

Hope everyone has a great day, and see y’all tomorrow!

Summer Nights

Backyard BBQ Bash

There’s nothing like a good, old-fashioned cookout to signify the start of summer. While the weather here has been anything but summery, my husband and I decided to make great use of a Home Depot gift card that I received as a graduation gift (which, by the way, is just amazing. I’ve been there four times in the past week). After looking at a number of fancy gas grills, we decided that we didn’t want to give up that awesome charcoal flavor that comes from a nice, classic Weber:

{Weber 22.5-inch charcoal grill, $149}

I probably should have listed this as a Father’s Day item—oops. Anyway, this is a great size—the smaller version doesn’t have the pot to catch all the ashes from under the grill, so this is a decidedly less-messy option. I don’t know what it is about men and grilling, but they all seem to love it, so you really can’t go wrong with this foolproof grill. Such a fun way to welcome summer—it makes a very generous housewarming or wedding gift, and it’s one that allows you to reap some benefits when your friends invite you over for dinner!

Graduation: Work It

Good morning, and happy Monday! I hope everyone had a great weekend. I had such a fun time dancing the night away in Newport, Rhode Island on Saturday night—the weekend passed much too quickly! Plus, any occasion that gets my handsome husband into a tuxedo is automatically a good one in my book.

While I do have a gift pick for today, I first want to take a moment to applaud and congratulate my amazing sister for her work in the San Francisco Decorator Showcase this year! She designed a room as an upscale fashion blogger’s office, and I am not exaggerating when I say that I was just blown away by her talent. San Franciscans, I recommend that you go see it in person, but in the meantime, here are some photos of the space. It’s simply wonderful. You should also all check out her newly-launched website, especially if you are in the need for an interior designer!

{Interiors images © Bess Friday Photography 2012}

If only all bloggers had a space like this to call an office, right? Sigh… Maybe one day, I will have a house that she can replicate this in!

Anyway, moving onto the gift pick, graduation season is upon us (including my own!) so I thought it would be nice to venture into that territory. While briefcases are kind of stodgy and boring, I think that a work/computer bag makes an excellent graduation gift, especially since it’s so common to have a work laptop these days. I love this one from Coach in the steel color:

{Crosby Leather Commuter, $548}

While this is classified as a men’s bag, I think it’s very chic for guys and girls alike. And with quality leather like this, it’s the kind of investment piece that only gets better with age!

Wearing His Heart on His Cuff…

Today’s gift pick is a little pricey, but ideal for certain hardcore college football fans. Behold, and remember that these are not just any ordinary cufflinks:

{Game-Used College Football Helmet Cufflinks, $180 per pair}

These handmade cufflinks are carefully crafted from sterling silver and game-played helmets from the school of your choice: LSU, USC, Alabama, UC Berkeley, Notre Dame, and Ohio State. How cool are these?! They come with the school’s name stamped onto the back, as well as a certificate of authenticity. If your man is a diehard fan of any of these schools, this is the gift for him!

Pinky Up

My good friends Christine and Jonathan are going to be first-time parents to a baby girl in a matter of weeks—so exciting! I was at the baby shower a few weeks ago, and it was pretty entertaining to see Jonathan in the midst of the pink-fest that was going on. He was a very good sport, helping to plan the surprise shower for his lovely wife—and he even participated in a quiz game that tested his knowledge of caring for babies!

However, as we all know, understanding little girls and the women they turn into is not something that comes with a road map. However, this book can at least serve as a first step…

{Tea Parties for Dads: A Crash Course in Daughters for New Fathers $10.78}

A snippet from the book: “Your pint-size princess may barely be fluent in the English language the first time she asks you to paint her tiny toenails, and trust us, she’ll expect you to know the critical difference between a pigtail and a ponytail when she bequeaths the hairdresser hat upon you.” A great baby shower gift for the often-overlooked dads!

Valentine’s Day: A Manly Drink

I tend to get somewhat mixed messages about guys’ opinions about Valentine’s Day. I know some who are of the “Why should guys have to do all the work?” camp, and then there are others who regard it as the one day a year that a girl can reasonably expect to be showered with gifts and attention.

I am of the opinion that Valentine’s Day gifts for the boys are thoughtful and a very nice thing to do, but one also has some flexibility in the territory between silly and romantic. (Quick poll: do guys even want flowers? This is something I have not experimented with).

So, all that being said, I naturally turned to good old Jack Spade in my search for a nice, manly gift, and I found these whiskey tumblers:

{Jack Spade “Good Grief” tumblers, $38 for a set of two}

Funny, right? I found these glasses to be rather amusing. Even better if you pair them with these re-usable whiskey stones!

Back by Popular Demand…

I featured these money clips last year, and I was so crushed when my friend told me that they had sold out before she had a chance to buy one for her boyfriend. Luckily, the folks over at Jack Spade know a good thing when they design it!

{Jack Spade Money Clips: Bones, Bacon, Dough, $65 each}

Hoping that she manages to snag one this time around! I think these clips are very cool. If my husband used money clips, I would totally get him one.

A Very Classy Tool

{Wall Mounting Bottle Opener, $12}

…what, you don’t have a wall-mounted, semi-permanent fixture for opening your beer bottles?

I’m not sure if this belongs in a frat house, hipster-land, or somewhere in-between, but it’s simultaneously amusing and practical—all while falling in the category of, “I hope I never come home to find one of these attached to my kitchen wall.”

But it does prevent you from ever having to dig around for a bottle opener, and it even comes with the necessary hardware. What do you all think?
